You can purchase a pan at prospecting stores, rock shops and even some hardware stores. Older more traditional pans were made of steel, but now many prospectors prefer the newer pans that are made of plastic, because they are lighter and don't rust.
Third, now you can start panning. Fill your pan with gravel and sand, then fill your pan with water. Move your pan up and back in a sideways motion. Gold is one of the heaviest elements and it will start to migrate to the bottom of your pan. After a few minutes of gentle motion the materials in your pan will start to stratify. The heavier materials including any gold or black sand will sink to the bottom. Carefully check what is in your pan and if it appears to be gold remove it.
